We are on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional lands of the Cree, Nakota Sioux, Saulteaux, Dene and Métis peoples.
Who we are
Aspen Ridge Cree Nation is a Treaty 6 First Nation in central Alberta, a little over an hour from Edmonton. About 3,000 people are on our registry and roughly half live on reserve.
Treaty
Our ancestors adhered to Treaty 6. The treaty was a nation-to-nation agreement, and it was not a surrender of the land — it was an agreement to share it. The medicine chest, the schools and the right to continue hunting, fishing and trapping were all part of what was promised.
Language
Plains Cree (nêhiyawêwin) is spoken here. It is taught at every grade in the school, and the Culture office runs open language classes twice a week at the hall.
The land
Our reserve covers three parcels along the river valley. The ceremonial grounds, the burial grounds and the berry flats east of the river are looked after by the Nation and are not open to development.
